C2E2 2013, Transformers, and Vex

The first con of the year has come and gone. It was a good show, though as the parent of a 1 year old I’m learning I’m always just on the edge of exhaustion. Even when I feel good I just can’t take staying up as late as I end up doing at cons. I’m also an introvert, which means at a certain point, usually the night of the 2nd day of a show, I never have time enough alone to recharge.

But all that aside, I did have a blast. I shared a table with Amy Chu and hung out a bit with Craig Yeung and had a fantastic time. I even made a little bit of money, which is good since I need that to purchase things…like food and water.

The day before leaving for the show I saw that Transformers: Robots in Disguise #16 came out. If you’re in to TF at all, I highly recommend that series, and not just because I worked on it.

Also, don’t forget about my Kickstarter for my creator-owned book, Vex. It only has 16 days left and we still have almost $8000 to raise. Yikes!

The Vex Kickstarter is on!

Vex is the story of an arrogant high school jock who wrongs a gypsy lunch lady. So she curses his yearbook so anything people write in it comes literally true. The story went online a couple years ago and now we’re trying to fund the first print run of the actual book.

We’re off to a good start! Thanks to everyone that got on board within the first hours. As part of the rewards for backing the project, I’ll be doing original sketches of characters from the book. Here’s an 11X17 sketch that would be part of the top tier reward package.

C2E2 2013

A week from this Friday I’ll board a non-United Airlines flight (I avoid them whenever possible after my SDCC return flight fiasco) and head to Chicago for C2E2. I’ll be set up in artist alley at table F6 with Amy Chu.

I’ll have original art available from Transformers, G.I. Joe, and Doctor Who and, as usual, will be open for commissions all weekend.

I also have four new prints I’ll be selling at the show (see below.) See you there!

Transformers: RID #15

Transformers Robots in Disguise #15 came out last month. Issue 16 wraps up this story arc written by John Barber and penciled by Andrew Griffith. Andrew has been one of the most detailed TF artists I’ve inked and the end result looks great, especially with Josh Perez’s colors.

If you haven’t picked it up, get on it!

CAPTAIN AMERICA, C2E2, AND CONVENTIONS

After wrapping up my last Transformers issue, I took a week to relax a little. Then my entire family got the stomach bug over the course of a week. I’m finally getting around to trying to get things together for C2E2. It’s only two weeks from today.

Warm up sketch: Medic

My grandfather was a medic during World War II and spent his time pulling wounded men off the battlefield in the Philippines. He never talked much about the war, just a few stories here and there. One day while driving him to Home Depot he said, somewhat out of the blue, “Grandma gets mad at me because nothing really gets to me. But I suppose it’s because of everything I saw in the war.”

After the war was over he considered going to medical school to become a doctor. But since this would leave his wife having to work 10 more years in the mill, he settled for the quiet career of a furniture salesman until he retired. He spent the rest of his life growing vegetables and helping deliver flowers for his son’s florist, always chewing a cigar and letting me tag along wherever he went.

Someone once remarked how my life would have been different had he become a doctor. Possibly, but I wouldn’t take anything for those days of following the former Staff Sergeant, who put his big dreams on hold for the sake of his family, around in the garden.

I’ve been spending a lot of time in my sketchbook this week getting ready for some upcoming projects and working out some character designs. Star Trek (The Original Series) has been playing in the background while I work in the evening, hence a few Trek references in the sketches.

Commission Roundup & C2E2 Pre-orders

I managed to squeeze in a few commissions in-between deadlines. I’m also going to go ahead a start taking commission pre-orders for C2E2 which is barely a month away. I haven’t done a show since the fall, so I’m itching to start my convention season.

Also, while my brother scanner does excellent for scanning in inks, it’s miserable when it comes to color. Even after tweaking the images in Photoshop they’re not really that close to the detail of the original. Oh well.

Transformers: RID #14

Transformers: RID #14 is out. I’m busy wrapping up the inks for #16 this week, so not a lot of time for the chit-chat and shenanigans.

I’ll just leave you with one of my favorite double page spreads from the issue.– well, maybe the only double page spread. I can’t remember now–featuring Devastator!
